On May 12th our interior design class went on a field trip to St.Paul, while in St.Paul we visited the James J. Hill House, a mansion from 1981. After that we went and walked around Summit Ave and looked at all the houses built. Our walk around Summit Ave was about an hour and a half, after that we went to the St.Paul Cathedral and took a tour around the cathedral looking at the architecture of it.

The James J. Hill House was our first stop on the vacation. It was built in 1981 by railroad magnate James J. Hill. It is a Richardsonian Romanesque style home with a massive, rugged style featuring randomly sized blocks of stone, sturdy pillars, rounded arches, and a generally strong horizontal emphasis. The house was designed by an East Coast architectural firm, Peabody and Stearns. This house would fit this family because it has 5 bedrooms 4 baths, this family has 5 children so two would share a bedroom, the oldest is a senior so he would be leaving soon and a then the children could all have their own room. There is a study room which would be good for the dad because he likes to read. There isn't a huge yard so it wouldn't be much work for the dad but still room for the kids to play. There is also a three car garage which is good because they have a lot of cars. There is a large kitchen for the mother who enjoys cooking. All the kids enjoy having friends over so there is a lot of living areas for them to hang out in.

Color Schemes

Monochromatic- Monochromatic colors are all colors of a single hue. Monochromatic color schemes are made up from a single base hue and extended using tints and shades. For my monochromatic olioboard I used a brown hue. It has a very comfortable and relaxed feel to it.

Analogous-Analogous colors are groups of three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, with one being the dominant color, which tends to be a primary or secondary color, and one on either side of the color. For my olioboard I used Green and Blue shades. It is a very bright room.

    2. Split Contemporary- The split-complementary color scheme is a variation of the complementary color scheme. In addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement. This color scheme has the same strong visual contrast as the complementary color scheme, but has less tension. For my Split Contemporary olioboard I used the colors Red Blue and Green, it has a bright look.

    4. Triadic- Triadic color scheme. Examples: The triadic color scheme uses three colors equally spaced around the color wheel. This scheme is popular among artists because it offers strong visual contrast while retaining balance, and color richness. For my olioboard i used the colors green, purple, and orange it has a relaxed calm feel.
